Drivers Improvement Program (DIP): A Comprehensive Guide:

Drivers Improvement Program

Maintaining a valid driver’s license is an essential aspect of personal independence. However, certain circumstances or decisions can impact your driving record, requiring extra steps to regain or maintain your driving privileges. The Maryland Driver Improvement Program (DIP) was created to help individuals who have encountered difficulties with their driving record and need support to improve their driving aptitude.

What Is the Drivers Improvement Program?

The DIP is a rehabilitation program established by the state to provide support and instruction to individuals who have shown poor driving habits, resulting in legal actions or points on their driver’s license. This four to six-hour course is designed for drivers who have already obtained their license but need intervention to avoid potential suspension or revocation.

Who Needs to Attend DIP?

Drivers may be assigned to the Maryland Driver Improvement Program for various reasons, including:

  • Referral by a judge or the MVA
  • Accumulating 5-7 points on their driving record
  • Conviction or probation for a moving violation

Drivers with 3-5 points may also be required to attend a DIP as a preventive measure. Additionally, some individuals voluntarily complete the program before their court date as a proactive step toward rehabilitation.

Course Purpose and Benefits

The drivers improvement course focuses on defensive driving techniques, traffic laws, and risk management. Participants learn how to recognize hazardous situations, manage distractions, and make safer decisions behind the wheel. It is your responsibility to contact one of these providers to gather information about class locations, dates, times, and fees.

Step 2: Completing The In-Person or Virtual DIP Class
Schedule a time with our Office to Take the Drivers Improvement Program.

Step 3: Take the Final Exam– Exam will be taken the same day as your class The final exam consists of 20 questions and must be completed during class

Step 4: Completing the Program
